LTA Staff Donate $35,000 to the Victims of Cyclone Winston

Mar 14, 2016

The Land Transport Authority Board of Directors, Management and Staff have generously donated $35,000 worth of annual leave and cash towards Prime Minister’s National Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation fund which will be used to assist the victims of cyclone Winston in the rehabilitation phase.

LTA Board Chairman, Mr Vijay Maharaj, LTA Board member Mr Ashok Patel, LTA Chief Executive Officer Mr Naisa Tuinaceva and LTA General Manager Technical and Operation Mr Faiyum Ali handed over the cheque to the Attorney General and Minister for Finance, Honourable Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum on March 3, 2016.

Many LTA staff do not have the financial resources to give, so as an alternative, the staff chose to sell their annual leave for the benefit of those affected by the cyclone, including some of their colleagues who have lost their home and all their possessions.

Mr Tuinaceva said he was proud of the employees’ selfless act of service.

“This is a milestone for the Authority and I’m extremely proud of my staff because they have made a huge sacrifice by giving away their well-earned leave days to help those who have been badly affected by the cyclone,” Mr Tuinaceva remarked.

“Our staff do not have much themselves and some have even lost everything they had during the cyclone, and yet they showed kindness and put others before themselves – this is simply amazing.”

Honourable Sayed Khaiyum, while receiving the cheque, thanked LTA staff for the much needed donation.

“This is very much appreciated, thank you” Mr Sayed Khaiyum said.

“When you have individuals and not businesses who have gone to the extent of selling their leave and raising the fund, this is a huge amount of contribution. We would like to thank individual staff of LTA who have gone ahead and raised this fund, as this also shows the fact that they are concerned about their fellow staff members and are helping them build (their lives).”

The Authority will also distribute food and other relief packages to LTA employees who have been affected by the cyclone.
