LTA Acknowledges Public Assistance In Identifying Bad Driver Behaviour

May 31, 2016

The Land Transport Authority is pleased with the support shown by the members of the public who have taken time to report various road offences via LTA’s free texting code 582.

LTA launched the free texting service which is available on all mobile networks in August last year and has since received all kinds of complaints associated with the breach of various road rules and regulations.

A total of 2,968 complaints were received by the Authority on 582 in the first quarter of this year of which the most were on illegal operation (675). Complaints that crossed the 100 mark and are of deep concern to the Authority include the use of mobile phone while driving (175 complaints), careless driving (159 complaints), dangerous driving (158 complaints) and excess load (139 complaints).

Other common complaints that are being reported regularly to LTA include the breach of Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Code of Conduct, irregular bus service, defective taxi meter, drink driving, driving without a valid driving license and the breaking of various basic road rules.

LTA Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Naisa Tuinaceva said while it was worrying to note that many drivers were disregarding basic road rules, the assistance being received from the public has been quite encouraging.

“Our enforcement officer can’t be everywhere at all time, so it is very encouraging to note the people of Fiji are willing to assist us by identifying and reporting road offenders and we would like to extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who is helping us in identifying bad driver behaviour,” said Mr. Tuinaceva.

LTA hopes to see an improvement in the behavior of bad drivers now that they are aware the public is reporting road offences.

“There are many drivers who follow road rules when they see that enforcement agencies are watching, but the same drivers tend to disregard the law and breach various code of conduct when enforcement agencies are not present,” revealed Mr. Tuinaceva. “But now that these drivers are aware the public is watching, we hope to see better driver behavior on our roads.”

The Authority aims to resolve complaints received via 582 within 48 hours upon receipt of report.
