Defensive driving employs five basic principles. By driving defensively, traffic-related injuries are reduced, even in adverse weather conditions. An important rule in defensive driving is anticipating other drivers' errors, mistakes in judgment and/or carelessness.
The Five Principles are simply explained below:
- Look up ahead. It sounds obvious to make sure you're looking ahead rather than what's directly in front of you road and traffic planning is key.
- Be aware of blind spots.
- Slow down at all intersections. Always observe the prevailing speed limits.
- Maintain a safe following distance.
- Minimize all distractions.
Whether you are a private motorist or a vocational licence holder driving for a living your responsibility is to drive defensively.
Note; LTA conducts the two important types of Defensive Driving Courses (DDC), Level 1 DDC, which is for Private cars, and Level 2 DDC for Public Service Vehicles.
