ROAD USERS URGED TO EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION DURING ADVERSE WEATHER

Oct 26, 2024

SUVA, Fiji (26 October 2024): The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji is advising all motorists and road users to refrain from unnecessary movements during this period of adverse weather conditions as a trough of low pressure currently lies over Fiji, bringing strong winds and significant rainfall that has led to flash flooding in various low-lying areas across the country.

For safety, LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa strongly urged all road users to avoid travelling to flood-prone areas and to stay updated on weather advisories issued by the Fiji Meteorological Service.

According to the latest advisory from the Fiji Roads Authority, several roads and crossings in the country have been impacted by flooding.

Mr Rokosawa said motorists should be aware that the following areas are currently underwater and completely closed to all traffic due to high water levels including the Vatuwaqa Crossing - Serea Back Road, Naitasiri.

He said these closures were implemented to protect public safety, and motorists are urged to comply strictly with road closure notices and detours to avoid dangerous situations.

“Heavy rainfall has caused surface flooding in certain areas within the Central Division. While some roads remain passable, drivers should proceed with extreme caution and reduce speed to prevent accidents on wet and slippery surfaces,” Mr Rokosawa said.

He said motorists should take note that the following roads are currently experiencing surface flooding but remain accessible in the Central Division:

* Grantham Road (opposite JWC)
* Greig Street
* Karsanji Road
* Jerusalem Road
* Kings Road
* Ratu Sukuna Road
* Fletcher Road

Mr Rokosawa said public bus services in the Central-Eastern Division have been affected because of heavy rain, flooding and landslides. This includes:

* Wainawaqa junction to Delailasakau
* Nasirotu Quarry
* Nasele bridge and Waisomo bridge
* Pass Delailasakau to Waivaka
* Navutu road

He said bus services to Naraiyawa, Namosi were suspended from today due to adverse weather condition as well as bus services to Navutu/Navolau as a result of flooding.

“Bus service in Lami was affected this morning in Qauia, Mau Village and Waidradra. Public transportation to Nakavu near Raiwaqa in Navua was also affected. The Authority will continue to monitor the situation,” Mr Rokosawa said.

“In light of the current weather conditions, the LTA urges all road users to prioritize their safety and that of others by avoiding unnecessary travel.

"Flash floods and high winds can create unpredictable hazards on the roads, and motorists are reminded that attempting to drive through flooded areas is extremely dangerous. The force of water can quickly overwhelm vehicles, putting lives at risk and further endangering rescue teams.”

In addition to heavy rain, Mr Rokosawa said a strong wind warning was in effect for Fiji as high winds could pose risks for drivers, especially on elevated or open roadways.

“Motorists should remain vigilant, particularly when passing through areas with large trees, power lines, or construction zones, as these can become hazardous under windy conditions. All road users should take heed of warnings and adjust their driving behaviours accordingly,” he said.

He said it was important for all Fijians to stay updated on weather alerts and road conditions issued by the Fiji Meteorological Service, Fiji Roads Authority, and other relevant authorities as situations could change rapidly with little warning.

For the Western Division, Mr Rokosawa said a few crossing inlets were blocked by debris including the Savusavu crossing, Nausori crossing, Dramagi crossing in Ra, Lololevu crossing in Vatukoula, Vatukoula Industrial crossing and Navuga crossing at Nadelei Rd.
