LTA URGES RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOURS ON OUR ROADS DURING DIWALI PUBLIC HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS

SUVA, Fiji (1 November 2024): Targeted patrols, preventive alcohol screenings, and comprehensive public awareness initiatives to enhance road safety will be the focus of the Land Transport Authority’s joint enforcement operations with the Fiji Police Force and municipal council officers this Diwali weekend.

As the Festival of Lights approaches, LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa said the Authority would intensify enforcement efforts and road safety awareness and public outreach to ensure the safety of all Fijians on our roads.

Recognising that festive periods often lead to increased traffic and congestion, Mr Irimaia Rokosawa said upholding road safety standards, promoting responsible driving behaviours, and facilitating smooth traffic flow were paramount.

“These initiatives aim to support the safety of all road users while enhancing awareness of the responsibilities shared by both drivers and pedestrians,” he said.

To support safe and enjoyable Diwali celebrations, Mr Rokosawa said LTA was rolling out the following key safety initiatives to minimise road incidents, in line with its recently launched National Joint Enforcement Operation with the Fiji Police Force and key stakeholders.

“In light of Diwali’s heightened road activity, LTA has stationed additional traffic teams at identified high-risk areas and accident-prone intersections. These teams will monitor driver behaviour closely, with a primary focus on curbing reckless driving, speeding, and other dangerous actions that could jeopardize road safety,” the CEO said.

“In collaboration with the Fiji Police Force and municipal council enforcement officers, LTA will set up special checkpoints to discourage and prevent impaired driving. Random alcohol tests will be conducted by police across key locations throughout the weekend.”

Mr Rokosawa said LTA’s public awareness campaign, "Drive Safe, Celebrate Responsibly," would engage Fijians through social media, radio, and public service announcements.

He said the campaign encouraged drivers and pedestrians alike to exercise caution and prioritise safe practices while travelling to and from Diwali festivities.

“These road safety messages will remind the public to plan their journeys well, ensure adequate rest times in between long drives to avoid driver fatigue, refrain from risky driving behaviours, and demonstrate consideration for all road users,” Mr Rokosawa said.

“With the increased pedestrian presence near celebratory gatherings and family events, drivers are urged to remain vigilant, particularly when navigating busy intersections and neighborhoods. Staying alert to sudden stops or unexpected actions can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents and ensure a smoother flow of traffic.”

While Diwali is a time for joy, togetherness, and patience, Mr Rokosawa said the Authority encouraged drivers to avoid aggressive maneuvers and demonstrate patience on the road.

He said simple actions such as yielding when necessary and refraining from honking in crowded areas could prevent unnecessary confrontations and promote a sense of community.

This Diwali, Mr Rokosawa called on the public to commit to responsible driving behaviours as drivers, pedestrians and passengers, and to support road safety efforts.

“We encourage all Fijians to make safety-conscious choices, stay vigilant, and abide by road rules to help create a secure and joyous Diwali weekend for all. We can enjoy the festivities while safeguarding our loved ones and our community,” he said.

“We ask all drivers to respect these road safety guidelines, prioritize caution, and celebrate responsibly. From the LTA Vuvale - Board, Management and Staff – we wish all Fijians a happy and safe Diwali.”
