SUVA, Fiji (21 November 2024): The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging all road users to exercise caution as adverse weather continues to affect parts of the country.
With heavy rain increasing the risks of slippery roads, reduced visibility, and potential flooding, LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized the importance of vigilance and adherence to traffic regulations to ensure the safety of all Fijians, particularly during the festive season when traffic volumes typically increase.
“Driving during adverse weather requires heightened alertness and responsible behaviour. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we urge all road users to take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and others,” he said.
“Speeding remains a leading contributor to road accidents in Fiji. In recent days, several accidents have been attributed to reckless and careless driving habits, including failure to observe speed limits. These behaviours not only endanger the lives of drivers but also pose significant risks to passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.”
The CEO said drivers should strictly adhere to speed limits, adjust their driving according to weather conditions, and maintain a safe following distance to prevent collisions. Drivers are also reminded to use headlights during heavy rain or poor visibility, avoid overtaking unless absolutely necessary and safe to do so and to plan trips to allow for unexpected delays due to weather or traffic conditions.
Mr Rokosawa said the Authority would continue its showcause proceedings against drivers who disregard road safety rules and traffic regulations, and engage in reckless driving habits that endanger lives.
“These showcause proceedings serve as a reminder that there are consequences for endangering lives on our roads. LTA will not hesitate to take further action against repeat offenders who demonstrate a lack of respect for traffic laws and public safety,” the CEO emphasized.
“Reckless and careless driving habits not only jeopardize the lives of drivers but also put passengers, pedestrians, and other road users at risk. We urge all drivers to remain alert, slow down, and adjust their driving to suit the current weather conditions.”
Mr Rokosawa said LTA’s joint enforcement operation with Fiji Police will intensify throughout the festive season to monitor compliance with road safety measures. These operations will focus on addressing speeding, reckless driving, and other traffic violations, particularly in areas prone to accidents during periods of high vehicle movement.
“Our enforcement teams will be actively patrolling and conducting spot checks to ensure road users are adhering to traffic rules. We will not tolerate actions that put lives at risk, especially during a season that should be marked by joy and celebration,” Mr Rokosawa said.
“All road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, must remain cautious and prioritize safety at all times. Passengers and pedestrians can play their part by staying alert and cautious.
“Passengers should also report unsafe driving to LTA through our texting platform 582, our complaints channel help@lta.com.fj or the Fiji Police Force, while pedestrians are advised to use designated crossings and remain visible, especially at night or during heavy rain.”
The CEO said LTA would continue its road safety public awareness campaigns, enforcement initiatives, and strict action against those who flout traffic laws.
