LTA CALLS FOR STRICT ADHERENCE TO ROAD SAFETY RULES AFTER TRAGIC ACCIDENT CLAIMS YOUNG LIFE

Nov 26, 2024

SUVA, Fiji: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued a strong call to all road users to prioritise safety and responsibility especially during the festive season, following yesterday’s tragic loss of a 13-year-old student in a road accident along Princess Road, Tacirua, and the hospitalisation of two others in separate incidents at Mead Road, Nabua and Daniva Road, Nasinu respectively.

Initial reports from the Fiji Police Force indicate that the accidents were caused by drivers losing control of their vehicles, a worrying trend that highlights the prevalence of speeding, careless, and reckless driving.

LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa said such behaviours not only endangered drivers but also put the lives of passengers and pedestrians at significant risk.

He said the festive season brought increased traffic on the roads, and with it, heightened risks.

“The Authority is calling on all road users to heed road safety measures during this busy time, as accidents can often have devastating consequences,” Mr Rokosawa said.

“We are losing innocent lives on our roads because of a lack of care and responsibility. The death of a young student and the injuries sustained by others are heartbreaking reminders of the need for greater accountability by drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike. These tragedies are preventable if everyone follows road safety rules and regulations.”

Mr Rokosawa said speed limits were not optional guidelines but essential measures designed to protect lives and as such, drivers should strictly adhere to posted speed limits and adjust their driving to suit weather conditions and the state of the roads.

He said current weather conditions experienced around the country demanded extra vigilance from all road users.

“Rainy weather and wet roads reduce visibility and traction, increasing the likelihood of accidents. In collaboration with the Fiji Police Force, LTA is reiterating the need for drivers to exercise caution, reduce speed, and maintain safe following distances,” the CEO said.

“Pedestrians are also urged to be cautious, use designated crossings, and avoid distractions such as mobile phones while walking. Passengers must ensure they use seatbelts and encourage drivers to operate vehicles responsibly.”

He said LTA’s Road Safety Education teams would continue its public outreach and awareness programmes, including visitations to primary and secondary schools on the importance of practising road safety measures.

Mr Rokosawa noted that the Authority had also intensified its enforcement measures against speeding and reckless driving.

“Showcause proceedings have been initiated against drivers found in violation of traffic laws, sending a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated,” he said.

“We need all road users to take road safety measures and traffic laws seriously. The responsibility to ensure safety lies with everyone—drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Losing lives on our roads is unnecessary and avoidable if we all commit to safe practices.”

LTA, in partnership with the Fiji Police Force and other stakeholders, will continue to promote a culture of safety on Fiji’s roads.

“However, real change requires collective effort and accountability. Every road user has a role to play in reducing accidents and saving lives. The tragic incidents in recent days underline the urgency of this message. The LTA calls on drivers to adhere to speed limits, drive cautiously in adverse weather, and avoid reckless behaviours such as overtaking in unsafe conditions,” Mr Rokosawa said.

Passengers are urged to speak up if a driver is behaving irresponsibly and ensure seatbelts are worn. Pedestrians are also advised to use footpaths, crosswalks, and pedestrian bridges where available, and stay alert to traffic.

“Every life matters. Let us not wait for another tragedy to realise the importance of road safety. We can prevent accidents, save lives, and ensure a safer festive season for all if we choose to prioritise road safety measures,” Mr Rokosawa said.
