LTA ISSUES SAFETY ADVISORY AMID ADVERSE WEATHER

Dec 27, 2024

SUVA, Fiji (27 December 2024): The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji is calling on all road users across the country to be vigilant as severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and flash flooding, continue to impact many areas.

LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa said these challenging conditions significantly increased the risks to road safety, and the Authority is urging both motorists and pedestrians to take extra care when traveling.

“With intense rainfall and potential flooding affecting many regions, we urge all road users to remain vigilant. The combination of heavy rain, reduced visibility, and flooded roads can create hazardous conditions. It is essential that everyone – motorists and pedestrians, prioritize their safety at all times,” he said.

“We are also advising the public to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone areas. If you must travel, ensure you are up to date with weather warnings and road closures. Remember to stay alert for changing conditions. Be prepared for sudden road closures or detours and potential hazards, including fallen debris, washed-out roads, and limited visibility.”

Despite the ongoing adverse weather, Mr Rokosawa said it was alarming that some drivers continued to ignore the risks by speeding and driving recklessly through floodwaters, endangering themselves and others.

"The Authority will not hesitate to take action against offenders who disregard traffic laws and public safety, ensuring that penalties are imposed to deter dangerous driving behaviours and protect all road users,” he said.

"Drivers should strictly follow speed limits, adjust their driving according to weather conditions, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles to prevent collisions, drivers must use headlights during heavy rain or poor visibility, avoid overtaking unless absolutely necessary and safe, and plan their trips to account for unexpected delays due to weather or traffic conditions.”

Mr Rokosawa said the Authority would continue to prioritize public safety amidst the ongoing adverse weather conditions.

“It is absolutely essential that everyone respects road closures and signs, especially in areas where flooding has occurred. Floodwaters can be deceptively powerful, and even a small amount of water can easily sweep a vehicle off the road. If you come across a flooded road, turn around immediately and find an alternative route. It is never worth risking your life or the lives of others,” the CEO said.

“These advisories and road safety measures are in place for the safety of all road users, and ignoring them can lead to dangerous consequences.”

Mr Rokosawa said the Authority was working closely with the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Roads Authority, municipal councils and other stakeholders to monitor road conditions and ensure that safety measures were enforced.

“Public safety remains our top priority during times of disaster, and we are taking additional steps to strengthen our emergency response capabilities. We encourage everyone to stay informed by checking reliable weather sources and local news for real-time updates on road conditions,” he said.

"Remember, the safety of you and your loved ones depends on your actions. Let us all do our part in ensuring that we stay safe and minimize the risks on our roads during this challenging period.”

Road users are encouraged to stay tuned for the latest road closures, weather advisories, and other safety information. LTA branches in Rakiraki, Ba, Nadi, Sigatoka, Navua and Levuka were closed today as a result of flooding. All Central-Eastern branches will close at 2pm today.
