FATAL ACCIDENT CLAIMS ANOTHER LIFE

Mar 28, 2025

SUVA, Fiji (28 March 2025): The Land Transport Authority is urging all drivers to adhere to speed limits and road safety measures as another life has been tragically lost in a fatal accident that occurred last night along the Queens Road in Korolevu.

According to preliminary reports from the Fiji Police Force, the victim, a man believed to be in his 30s, was travelling towards Suva with a workmate when the vehicle he was driving veered off the road after he allegedly lost control of the vehicle.

The driver was rushed to the Sigatoka Hospital, but was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival while the second occupant of the vehicle, a man in his 20s, is currently admitted at the hospital in stable condition.

LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa, expressed concern over the incident and extended his sympathies to the family of the deceased and the passenger currently receiving medical treatment.

“This is yet another unfortunate accident where a life has been lost. While police investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal crash, the tragic accident marks the second fatality on our roads this week. Speeding continues to be the leading cause of road accidents and fatalities in Fiji and we are urging motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and all road safety advisories issued by authorities.”

Despite numerous warnings and continuous public awareness campaigns, Mr Rokosawa said some drivers continued to disregard safety measures and traffic regulations.

“Speeding, and engaging in reckless driving behaviours must stop. This accident reinforces the critical need for all drivers to be vigilant, responsible, and proactive in preventing road accidents. A momentary lapse in judgment can result in lifelong consequences for families and communities,” the CEO said.

He added that joint enforcement operations between the LTA and Police were ongoing across the country in an effort to curb such incidents and hold negligent drivers accountable.

The Authority, he said, continued to appeal to all road users to make road safety a priority—not just for themselves, but for their passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians alike.

“Our enforcement efforts and public outreach and campaigns on road safety not only focusing on compliance of road safety regulations but also on major causes of fatal and serious accidents such as speeding, drink driving and reckless driving habits.

“It is also important for drivers to maintain good steering control of their vehicles, especially around bends and during adverse weather. Proper steering control and road awareness are essential components of safe driving,” Mr Rokosawa said.

The current road death toll stands at four, a notable decrease compared to 14 recorded at the same time last year. While this decline indicates progress in certain areas of road safety, the CEO stressed that even one life lost on our roads was one too many.

He said the Authority joined Police and other enforcement agencies in urging all Fijians to take these incidents seriously and to practice caution and mindfulness every time they take to the road.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the grieving family of the deceased and pray for the swift recovery of the injured passenger. Let this be a wake-up call for everyone to drive responsibly,” Mr Rokosawa added.
