Suva, Fiji (03 April 2025): The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is once again calling on all road users to exercise vigilance, responsibility, and caution on our roads, following the tragic loss of another life in Nasinu last night.
According to preliminary reports from the Fiji Police Force, the 60-year-old victim was crossing Yasiyasi Road near the Valelevu roundabout when he was struck by a bus driven by a man in his 50s.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa expressed concern over the rising number of pedestrian-related fatalities, many of which could have been prevented if both drivers and pedestrians took greater responsibility and adhered to road rules and road safety measures.
While expressing his condolences to the families of the victim, Mr Rokosawa said the incident also emphasized the importance of pedestrians taking responsibility for their safety on our roads, as well as drivers adhering to speed limits during adverse weather.
“Pedestrian safety is just as critical as driver responsibility. Roads are shared spaces, and it’s essential that pedestrians take the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of accidents," Mr Rokosawa said.
“We also urge families and communities to assist elderly individuals when crossing streets or roads. If you see someone in need of help, please offer guidance and ensure they reach the other side safely.
“There is also a need for pedestrians to use designated crossings and avoid jaywalking, especially in busy or high-traffic areas. Pedestrians should also be cautious and avoid distractions such as mobile phones or headphones while crossing the street, as these actions can lead to dangerous situations.
“Wearing bright or reflective clothing at night can significantly improve visibility and help prevent accidents.”
Mr Rokosawa said that in recent weeks, a disturbing trend had emerged, with a rising number of serious road accidents and fatalities—many of which could have been prevented.
“Speeding and careless driving continue to be the leading causes of road accidents, resulting in unnecessary injuries and fatalities. Despite ongoing efforts to raise awareness, these dangerous driving behaviours continue, putting the lives of all road users at risk,” he said.
“We cannot afford to take our safety and the safety of others for granted. We encourage drivers to adhere to road safety guidelines and regulations at all times. The responsibility for road safety lies with every individual on the road.
“Drivers must be cautious, remain within speed limits, buckle up, avoid distractions such as using their mobile phones, avoid drink and driving, and always be prepared for sudden changes in traffic conditions.”
He said the Authority was also progressing its showcause proceedings against habitual offenders who continued to disregard traffic regulations despite numerous awareness campaigns on road safety.
Mr Rokosawa said joint enforcement operations with Police and municipal councils were also underway to ensure safer roads and compliance with road safety rules and measures.
“We need to shift the mindset around road safety. It’s not just about obeying the rules, but about creating a culture where everyone is responsible for ensuring their own safety, as well as the safety of others on our roads.
“It’s about continuous effort and collaboration. We all have a responsibility to ensure that our roads are safer for everyone. Only by working together can we make a real difference in reducing accidents and preventing tragedies,” the CEO said.
The road death toll currently stands at 8 compared to 17 for the same period last year.
Of the eight fatalities recorded this year, the leading causes have been speeding (4), careless driving (2), pedestrian at fault (1) and improper overtaking (1).
